On Thursday 9 January, Irish diplomats and Defence Forces’ peacekeepers visited Ó Fiaich College as part of the ‘Global Ireland Schools’ programme.

Ó Fiaich is now one of the 122 schools visited since the programme was launched by the Taoiseach in December 2018. ‘Global Ireland Schools’ forms part of the ‘Global Ireland’ programme which is part of the Government’s strategy for doubling Ireland’s international impact by 2025.

These visits gave students the chance to learn about Ireland’s role in a changing world from diplomats and peacekeepers who have served and continue to serve Ireland abroad.

Two local Defence Forces peacekeepers, Owen Brennan and Derek Rogers, past pupils of Ó Fiaich College, returned to the school to share their experiences and to talk about the work they do overseas. They spoke to our Transition Years and 5th Years about Ireland’s place in the world and our role in the European Union and at the United Nations.

After the presentations, students had an opportunity to ask our visitors some questions and the school was presented with a UN flag and a copy of the preamble of the UN Charter.
